ABOUT ME

GEOLOGIST. VOLCANOLOGIST. PHOTOGRAPHER.

My name is Helga Kristín, and I am a 28-year-old Icelandic geologist.

I have a BSc in geology and MSc in volcanology and petrology.

Currently, I'm studying for my Ph.D. degree in volcanology and petrology, where my main focus is to understand how the volcano Öræfajökull in southeast Iceland is structured from within and how the magmas behave in that gigantic volcano. My love for science and nature has been a part of me since I was a small kid, where my main passion started out with dinosaurs and planets.  I realized soon that I belonged in geological sciences. My passion for photography also comes in handy in my studies. On Instagram, I combine my adventures and geological knowledge where I explain complicated science in a simple way. Along with my Ph.D. studies, I am also working on the current eruption that we have here in Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula. I'm also a mountain guide and a glacier guide so, in a way, I spend my year mostly outdoors.
